Accessibility

With the opening of the Elgar Centre in 2000, to complement the atmospheric Birthplace Cottage where Elgar was born, the Elgar Birthplace Museum now offers more accessible facilities to all visitors, including those with limited mobility, or impaired hearing or sight.

Physical Access

There are designated parking spaces close to reception, and a wheelchair is available for use on site.  The modern Elgar Centre has wheelchair access throughout visitor reception, the major exhibition areas, the shop and our fundtion room, The Carice Elgar Room.

The upper floor of the historic Birthplace Cottage is approached by steep and narrow stairs, which limits or prevents access for less agile visitors.  There is. however, wheelchair access to the study and ground floor of the Birthplace Cottage and into the garden (gravel paths).

For Visitors with Hearing Impairment

The displays are all labelled with printed captions and there are larger panels of information or room guides in most areas.  Our audio guide is availlable with RNID approved headphones.  A text version of our guide is also available.

If you have difficulty hearing any emergency alarm, please let our staff know when you arrive.  Hearing dogs are welcome.

Visually Impaired Visitors

Large print room guides are available on request.  Our audio guide describes many exhibits, with Elgar's words and music.  Telephone-type handsets play further musical extracts.

Exhbits on general display cannot be handled, but a hadnling box is available free of charge to visually imparied visitors.  Please book this service in advance of your visit.

Guide dogs are welcome.  Please ask our staff for any other help you may need.

There is a disabled toilet facility on site.
